Remember Who is In Your Boat by Terradez Ministries

Remember Who Is In Your Boat!

Many times when we are facing a challenging life circumstance, we look at what is going on around us and take our eyes off Jesus. However, when in the middle of a storm, it is important to remember who is in your boat with you!

Who Is In Your Boat?

When Jesus was still with the disciples, He gave them very clear instructions regarding their purpose and the authority they were to use in His name. He “called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick” (Luke 9:1-2).

“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Mark 16:17-18

The disciples still struggled to grasp the extent of the power Jesus had given them.

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”…37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Expected the Storm

I know we’ve often read this story, but do you realize that God was in the boat with them? Jesus told the disciples they were using the boat to cross to the other side of the lake. Jesus expected the storm. Although Jesus knew the storm was coming, He still told the disciples to go. They were going to make it! Jesus would not have told them to do something that they could not achieve.

However, during the storm, the disciples (not yet grounded in faith) went from, “Ooh, this could be scary,” to “God help! We’re going to die!” They took their eyes off Jesus and focused on their surroundings. The moment Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples were astounded at His authority. They did not fully appreciate Who was with them in the boat or the authority He had given them. The disciples didn’t need Jesus’ help that night. They had everything within themselves to get across that lake; they just didn’t realize it.

Storms will come. In fact, Jesus promised they will (John 16:33). However, even in the middle of a storm, remember who is in your boat! Jesus will never leave or forsake you. He has given you all the power to overcome!

Keeping Your Eyes on Jesus

Another storm gave the disciples an opportunity to step out in faith. Again, they were out on the sea in a boat, while the storm raged.

25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Matthew 14:25-32

Peter only began to sink when he allowed the storm to distract Him. Jesus was right there, within reach. Yet Peter allowed the fact that the waves were crashing around him to make him afraid. He was already walking on the water! That miracle alone should have given him a huge level of confidence and courage. But that’s what circumstances do. They distract us to get our eyes off of Jesus, even though Jesus is right there with us!

Don’t get distracted. Keep your eyes on Jesus, and He will keep you in peace (Isaiah 26:3).
