Hello, and welcome to Abundant Life. Praise God thanks for joining me and Carlie here in the lounge. And we’re excited, that we’ve got a great program for you today. Praise God. I mean, we never have a bad program. Do we?
Carlie Terradez:
Well, I’m glad you cleared that up.
Ashley Terradez:
They were good programs because they’re all based on the word of God, but we’re teaching the word of God. But today we’re excited because we’re teaching about how to live fearlessly. I think that’s a word, right?
Carlie Terradez:
Fearless.
Ashley Terradez:
Fearlessly.
Carlie Terradez:
To have less fear.
Ashley Terradez:
Could you live fearlessly?
Carlie Terradez:
Yeah.
Ashley Terradez:
Because you can. Yeah, fearlessly. Yeah.
Carlie Terradez:
Fearless living.
Ashley Terradez:
Living fearlessly. And what we’ve been talking about is how fear is not a part of who we are. Fear is not part of our identity. We’ve looked at how fear can actually come about because we have insecurity by not knowing who we are in Christ, not knowing God’s love for us. We talked about how perfect love casts out fear. And when you understand how much God loves you and you understand how much God’s love for you is unconditional and He loves you, that’ll take out most fear right there.
Carlie Terradez:
That’s true. Last time, we started to out, by talking about how in the garden of Eden in the fall in Genesis chapter three, that was the very first instance of when fear was noted in the Bible. It says, Adam and Eve, they ate of the tree, and they heard God’s voice and they covered themselves. And they knew that they were naked, and they were afraid and they hid themselves. And how Eve had listened to the lies of the serpent, and he was really questioning her identity. The enemy, he can’t stop us getting born again, he can’t stop us receiving the promises of God, but if he can get us to question who God is on the inside of us, we’ll start to operate in fear because we won’t understand what our real identity and what the power of the identity as a child of God is and what it means.
Carlie Terradez:
And so, Eve fell for the lies of the serpent. He said to her, “You just eat of this apple, and you’re going to be like God,” because she didn’t really understand that she was already like God, made in His image. She fell for his lies. And the faith, the trusting confidence, that she had between her and God, she started to put that more in the lies of the enemy than she did and what God had told her. And so, the very trust that she had between her and God, she took that trust, and she trusted more the lies of the enemy. And those lies that when she did that, that led to fear, that led to shame, that led to separation from God. When Eve trusted the lies of the enemy, not only did fear creep in, but she gave away her authority.
Carlie Terradez:
Adam and Eve had a job. Their job in the garden was to go and subdue the animals of the earth and the birds of the air and subdue and have dominion over the things of earth. But she took that authority, that power, that blessing, that inheritance, and when she started to listen to the lies of the enemy, she gave the enemy her authority. She gave the enemy their blessing and their inheritance. And that’s where we get the lies and the power of the enemy operating in the earth today. But good news, when Jesus came and He died on the cross and He rose again, He stripped the enemy of the power of the harm us. He took pack the keys of the kingdom, and He restored that at that power and that authority and that identity to mankind.
Carlie Terradez:
See, Jesus changed everything, and because of Jesus, now, we don’t have to live like orphan children. We can live like children of God adopted into His family with His power and His name and His authority. We can live fearless. Fearless living. That means, the definition, dictionary definition of the word fearless is to be bold, to be brave, and to be intrepid. Amen? We don’t have to fear anything in this world anymore because of everything that Jesus paid for, for us. In fact, fear isn’t even part of who we are. It’s not who we were created to be.
Ashley Terradez:
Amen. We’re not talking about fear of the Lord, right?
Carlie Terradez:
Not the reverence of God, no.
Ashley Terradez:
If we’re talking about fear, some people need to understand, some people might misunderstand is, the fear of the Lord is something completely different. That’s a reverence, that’s an honoring, that’s a fear-
Carlie Terradez:
God Almighty kind of. Awe and wonder.
Ashley Terradez:
… of how big God is and how almighty God is. Yeah. That’s a healthy fear of your life. Fear of the Lord. But that fear is a different type of fear because that fear doesn’t involve torment. It doesn’t hold you back. It doesn’t put you into anxiety and things like that.
Carlie Terradez:
Or anguish. Yeah.
Ashley Terradez:
No, it’s the opposite. So, I like how it’s put here in I John 4, 1 John 4:4, it says, “You are of God, little children.” I like this. We’ve been talking about we’re children of God.
Carlie Terradez:
We’re children of God.
Ashley Terradez:
“You are of God, little children and have overcome them because He who is in you,” talking about Jesus, “He who is in you,” the spirit of God in us, “is greater than he who is in the world.” And we have overcome the world through Jesus. Because now we’re in Christ, praise God, we’re overcomers. Another great verse is Romans 8:37. Romans 8:30 or is it 35? I have to check it now in case we get it wrong. But in Roman, Paul says it this way, he says, “In all these things, we are more than conquerors.” We are more than conquerors. We’ve already conquered. In Romans 8:37, “In all these things, we are more than conquerors.” So, the real you has overcome whatever trial is that’s coming against you. The real you is overcome whatever thing you’re worried about, whatever you’ve got anxiety about. You’ve overcome it anyway through Christ. Christ has already overcome it for you, and now we’re in Christ, praise God.
Ashley Terradez:
One of my minister friends puts it this way, we’ve been in-Christed. When you got born again, when you said yes to Jesus, when you made Jesus the Lord of your life, you got in-Christed, and now in Christ, praise God, you’re overcomers. You can overcome whatever’s coming against you, praise God, because God’s given you the strength to do that. He’s given you the ability to do that. So, really, fear isn’t who we are anymore.
Carlie Terradez:
Nope.
Ashley Terradez:
We shouldn’t have to fear.
Carlie Terradez:
It’s not part of our character or our nature.
Ashley Terradez:
It’s not who we are. Amen.
Carlie Terradez:
In Ephesians 1 verse 4, it says, “Just as He chose us in Him,” this is talking about Jesus, Jesus, “chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be Holy and blameless before him in love.” Think about that for a minute. Before God put the earth together, before He made the seas and the land and the air and the stars and the moon, He thought about you. He had you in mind. He had your picture in his wallet, right? He had you in mind. He thought about your hair color, your eye color, your character and nature. He thought about the days that He had planned for you and the words that you would speak and all of the things, the wonderful places that He wanted to take and do with you. Before He even had a world to put you in, He chose you to be with him forever. It blows my mind.
Carlie Terradez:
He says in verse five, “He predestined us to adoption as sons to Himself through Christ Jesus according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise and glory of His grace, which He graciously bestowed on us in the Beloved.” God chose us to be in relationship with Him, not to not to be fearful. We see this in that in the Old Testament, but in the Old Testament, there’s lots of slave mentality. For hundreds of years, the children of God were persecuted, they were held captive, they were held as slaves. Now, at some point, they were… We know the story of Moses in the book of Exodus, they were freed from slavery, and God was trying to take them into the promised land. He was trying to take them into a land that He had prepared for them, to have a covenant with them. They were His kids, and He wanted to bless them.
Carlie Terradez:
But even though they were free from slavery physically, they were still captured in their own mind. They had slave mentality, and it took many years for them to renew their mind, to see themselves as God wanted them to see themselves. And I think many of us deal with that in the realm of fear. Even though Jesus, he says for freedom, he says this in Galatians, “For freedom, Christ has set us free.” Never again to be subject, to be held captive, in captivity, but it is for freedom that He said is free. But in our mind, fear is still holding us down. It’s still holding us captive because we haven’t really understood what it means to be adopted into His family. Planned before the beginning, the very foundation in the world, to be chosen, chosen by the beloved. Man, if we could just get a revelation of how much God loved us, that would fix most things. Right? Perfect love casts out fear.
Ashley Terradez:
It is so powerful. I love that in Ephesians 1:4, that he chose us before the foundation of the world. Once I remember I was driving around, we live here in Colorado, the USA, and we was driving around. We have a place called Garden of the Gods, and it’s these big rocks. They say they’ve been there millions of years. We don’t believe that, but they’ve been there for thousands of years, basically. And I was looking at the rock formations, and the Lord spoke to me. he said, “Before any of this came about,” so wherever you’re living in the world right now, look at something that’s know hundreds of years old or thousands of years old, whatever that is. If that’s the sea, whether that’s mountains, whatever it is, just think about it. God had you in mind, He had a plan for you, had you in mind. He chose you before that was even created. Before the world was even created, God had you in mind. Praise God.
Ashley Terradez:
And we started to meditate on things, and we start to meditate on how much God loves us, how much God’s unconditional love for us came after us. Praise God. And God just didn’t leave us to our own devices. He had put a plan in place, right from the fall, right when Adam and Eve gave them authority over, He put a plan in place. God put a plan in place to redeem us back again because He loves us, and He wants intimate relationship with us. He wants to indwell us. We’re His temple, and that was God’s plan all along, for God to indwell us and have intimate relationship with us. Praise God.
Ashley Terradez:
And God’s love for you is unconditional. Somebody will say, “Well, if I’m like this and like that, God will love me more.” No, God’s love for you, you can’t do anything to hinder how much God loves you, and you can’t do anything for God to love you more. It’s unconditional. He loves you because of who He is, not because you’re so lovely. Praise God. It’s not about you. It’s about Him. So, when we start meditating on God’s love for us, when we start realizing how much God loves us, I’ll tell you what, it changes things. It really does. It makes secure in that, and it does away with fear. That’s why perfect love casts out fear.
Carlie Terradez:
We’ll cease to doubt. Understanding the love of God and what it means to have a father that’s always there for us, that never leaves us or forsakes us. We’ll stop wondering whether God’s going to protect us. We’ll stop wondering whether God’s going to provide for us or whether He’s going to heal us or fix us if we’re broken. We’ll stop wondering if God has a plan for our lives. Because in love, there is security. Perfect love casts out fear. In the love of God, is protection, there is provision. we call this thing faith, trusting confidence. Faith is how we access the promises God is. Really, we’re just talking about our trusting confidence that we place more in the words of God, than we do in the lies of the enemy.
Carlie Terradez:
I remember one time I was at home, and I was just starting to get a bit of a glimpse of how much God loved me. And I remember being in the kitchen, I had my worship music on, I was praising God, and there was this knock at the door. And I went to open the door, and we had three little kids at home, and Hannah, I think, it was a newborn because it was like January, so she was a newborn. And then, we had a one year old and a two year old. It was kind of busy. It was kind of intense.
Carlie Terradez:
And I went to open the door, and as I went to open the door, I just turned the latch there and it was forced open. And there was a man, a big man outside my front door trying to push his way in. He was really like shouting and swearing at me, and he was super aggressive. And he started to tell me that I had taken his money and that he was some sort of debt collector, and he was going to come into my house and burn my house down and all the things… Horrible, ugly things that he was going to do to me and the kids. And it turns out that he was… I didn’t know the man, but we had an employee that we had to fire. It was a bit of a long story. He’d stolen a car from our car [inaudible 00:00:12:01], and you have to find people at that point, don’t you?
Carlie Terradez:
And he’d gotten into some trouble with some really nasty people like the local debt collectors, loan sharks, mafia, whatever. And when he got into trouble with them, he passed his debt onto this guy and said, “These people have got your money, go collect it.” And that happened to be at our house.” And so, when they showed, I mean, he had an agenda, this man, and he was not going to stop until he got into our house and did whatever. And Ashley was off at work. And I tell you what happened in the middle of that, the mama bear in me rose up.
Ashley Terradez:
Don’t mess with mama bear.
Carlie Terradez:
Don’t mess with mama bear. I’m like, “Oh no, sonny Jim, you’re not going to come in here.” And it’s amazing, when we are focused on our relationship with God, the love of God is a powerful force that protects us, and fear has no place in that realm of protection. And what happened, I mean I’ve mentioned previously, but I was quite introvert, actually. I’m only five foot tall. I’m not like a really big person. People meet me and they say, “Oh, you’re much smarter in real life than you are in television.
Ashley Terradez:
They make you taller on television? [inaudible 00:13:05].
Carlie Terradez:
They do. I don’t know what happens, but I look bigger on television. But I opened the door, and what came out of me in that moment was faith. It was the opposite of fear. All of the natural circumstances would really usually have generated fear, right? That would have been a normal response to that. But faith came out of me, and I just opened the door wide open and I looked him in the eyes and I pointed my little finger in his nose. And I said, “Who do you think you are coming at me?” And what came out of my mouth, I don’t even remember the words, but I mean-
Ashley Terradez:
Did you say uncircumcised Philistine? That’s what it sounds like.
Carlie Terradez:
No. That sounds like David and Goliath, doesn’t it.
Ashley Terradez:
Who do you think you are, you uncircumcised Philistine?
Carlie Terradez:
Who do you think you are, you uncircumcised Philistine coming against the armies of the living God? I’ve got a covenant with a Lord Almighty. But instead of fear coming out, what came out of me was faith and power. And I just started speaking right back at him, “Who do you think you are coming around to collect money from me?” And I mean, I just started speaking, and it was almost like with every word that came out of my mouth, I was swinging a punch at him. Now, I never touched him, but he looked at me and I could see fear in his eyes. The fear of the Lord was in his eyes. And he started actually staggering backwards down the garden path until he was about, I don’t know, 10, 15 feet from me. And he took one last look at me, and he was barely able to stand up. He hung on to the fence post where our gate was like he was trying to set himself. He took one last look at me, and he took off running down the road.
Carlie Terradez:
I mean, I never touched him and he never laid a finger on me, but we exchanged many words. But my words were words of power. Amen. And he ran off scared. And the police… I mean, I shut the front door, and at that point, I think that I think the faith left me in that moment and I melted like a puddle of jelly on the floor and fear swept over me in that moment. But when we decide to keep ourselves in the love of God, to keep ourselves focused, Isaiah 26 says, it says, “He who keeps his mind stayed upon God, is kept in perfect peace.” Peace is the antidote for fear in our lives. We can’t be in faith, we can’t be in peace and fear at the same time.
Carlie Terradez:
And in that moment, I always… I mean, I was in my kitchen worshiping the Lord was when the enemy tried to come against us. And because of that, I’m a big believer that it was faith that dwelled in me, it was that it was that powerful force that came from the love of God. And it was almost like, “You know what? I’m a child of the living god, who do you think you are coming knocking on my door? Oh, you’re coming against me? I don’t think so.” And this is a powerful testament. When the police came around, they said, “This guy was a nasty piece of work, wasn’t he?”
Ashley Terradez:
Yeah, yeah. It wasn’t a good situation. Yeah.
Carlie Terradez:
It wasn’t good. But I know that there was a clear protection on my life and my family because that relationship with the Lord enabled me in that moment to stand in faith rather than allow fear to enter in.
Ashley Terradez:
You mentioned something there about keeping yourself in the love of God, and I think that’s so key. God’s love for us is constant, God’s love us is perfect.
Carlie Terradez:
It’s always on. Never off.
Ashley Terradez:
It’s always on. He’s perfect. But we have to choose to accept God’s love. We have to choose to keep ourselves in the love of God. I often use this example. Jesus described John or John described himself as the disciple that Jesus loved, and John was the one who put his head on Jesus’ chest and ran to Jesus and things like that. Well, really, it wasn’t that Jesus loved John any more than the other disciples, it was that John understood how much Jesus loved him, and it gave him boldness to put his head on Jesus’ chest at dinner and things like that. So, we have to understand how much God loves us. And also, there’s things we can do to receive the love of God. Now, again, we’re not making God love us, God already, His love for us-
Carlie Terradez:
He’s made up His mind.
Ashley Terradez:
… His love for us is constantly. Yeah, He’s made up his mind. His love for us is constant. We always say this, grace has already done it. Grace has done it. But our part by faith is to receive it, and we have to receive the love of God. And there’s some things we can do to keep ourselves in the love of God. In fact, Jude-
Carlie Terradez:
To keep our mind stayed upon God.
Ashley Terradez:
Yeah. Just like Isaiah 26:3, you said, about keeping your mind stayed in the load. This is Jude. I like how Jude puts it. Jude chapter 1 verse 20 says, “But you beloved,” see, we’re already beloved. I like this. It’s a play on words on the English, but beloved, all we got to do, really, is be loved. I think it was seven times that Jesus was called the beloved son of God. It said, “This is my beloved son in whom I’m well pleased.” One for every day of the week, praise God. But that’s what God spoke over Jesus, “This is my beloved son,” and we just have to be loved, if you like. It’s a little bit cheesy, but just be loved.
Carlie Terradez:
Allow us to receive the love of God.
Ashley Terradez:
Amen. [inaudible 00:17:34] it says, “But you beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.” One way we keep ourselves in the love of God, one weapon we have against fear, if you like, is our prayer language. When we pray in the Holy Spirit, when we pray in our prayer language, we are keeping ourselves in the love of God. And then, verse 21 says, “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” See, Jude gives us a practical tool there of how to, or Paul does writing Jude, of how to keep ourselves in the love of God. We pray in the Holy Ghost, we pray in the spirit, and that will help us keep our mind stayed in the Lord and that’ll help us keep ourselves in love of God. Praise God.
Carlie Terradez:
Absolutely.
Ashley Terradez:
That’s the key to overcoming fear. When you meditate on how much God loves you and you meditate on how much God’s already done for you, that will be eradicated a lot of fear in your life, because fear is of the unknown. Like, “Is this going to work out? Is it…” I’ve got news for you, Jeremiah, was it 29:11?
Carlie Terradez:
Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Ashley Terradez:
Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts,” this is God speaking, “I know the thoughts I have towards you, the plans I have towards you, says the Lord. Thoughts to prosper you, thoughts to increase you, thoughts to give you an expected end, a hope and a future.” Praise God. And that’s a few different translations mashed together, but that’s what verse is, Jeremiah 29:11. That’s God’s thoughts towards you, and if we meditate on those things, I’m telling you, that will eradicate a lot of the fear that we have, a lot of the thoughts of fear that we have in our life.
Carlie Terradez:
I think a big part of overcoming fear is recognizing that it’s there, that it’s present, that it’s real, that it exists, but also making a decision to trust God and really to package up that fear and give it to Him.
Ashley Terradez:
That’s what you do, right? You have a visual picture.
Carlie Terradez:
Seriously, I’m a real visual person, but I believe this is going to help somebody. I dealt with a lot of fear, it just came from things that happened to me in my childhood. And some of those fears were completely rational, some of them were based in trauma, but the Lord really helped me with this visual picture. He says, “Every time you have a thought that generates in you a fear response,” and we’re going to go through some characteristics of fear in a moment to help you recognize what those responses might be, “But I want you to take that thought captive.”
Carlie Terradez:
It talks about this, I think it’s II Corinthians chapter 10, take that thought captive. In other words, take that thought, and put it…. And to me, He showed me like a box, like a shoe box. And you put it in that and wrap it up and with wrapping paper like it’s a gift, and you can put a bow on it, you can make it pretty easy like. But make sure it’s well contained. That thought, physically take it in your mind and put it in the box, and then hand it to me and I’m going to take it.
Carlie Terradez:
And to me, that really helped me because it helped me to literally identify thought, and literally what it would it talks about in the scripture is cast your burdens onto Jesus. Because you know what? Jesus wants us to be free for fear. It’s not who we are. It’s not who we we’re created to be. He paid on the cross to take our fear away just as he did as sin away. But there is still part of us sometimes we hold onto it, and He can’t take it from us if we’re holding onto it. We need to allow God, we need to give it to Him. Cast your burdens onto Christ.
Carlie Terradez:
That very clear vision for me was a really helpful tool, and I believe that will help you, too. If you deal with these things, that physical in your mind, in your imagine… Imagine giving that particular fear and saying, “Lord, I see this is a fear. I see this is a lie. I’m going to give it to you, and I’m not going to take it back. I’m going to entrust it with you.” So, any time that fear comes to me again, I’m like, “Nope, I’m not taking it back. Return to sender.” Right? I’m not receiving that back again.
Ashley Terradez:
Well, Jesus carried it away. We looked at Isaiah-
Carlie Terradez:
Exactly. So, we don’t have to.
Ashley Terradez:
We looked in Isaiah 53, how Jesus carried our fears away. He carried the anxiety and the grief and the burdens away. Psalm 55:22, it says, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you.” Casting our burdens. Any fear or… But that word there, burdens, can also mean anxiety and fear. Cast it unto the Lord, like Carlie’s saying. Give it to God. He doesn’t want us to carry that burden. And then, in II Corinthians 10, in II Corinthians 10 verse 5, it says casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.”
Carlie Terradez:
And that’s what fear does.
Ashley Terradez:
Yes.
Carlie Terradez:
It’s a lie that exalts itself.
Ashley Terradez:
Yeah, fear is exalting itself above the knowledge of God, above the word of God and saying, “This isn’t going to work out,” or, “This is going to happen to you.” Above, “the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” And you’re back out one verse in II Corinthians 10:4, it says, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” And often, strongholds are a fear we’ve had over and over and we’re thinking about.
Carlie Terradez:
It’s rooted, it’s taken a resident in us.
Ashley Terradez:
Yep, yep. And it’s a fear we’ve had over and over. So, you’re saying, you know what? Cast that thing down, praise God, bring those thoughts into captivity, and make them obedient to Jesus, make them obedient to what God says about us. And you can give it the John 10:10 test. These thoughts, are they coming to kill, steal, and destroy? Or are these thoughts coming to give me life and life more abundantly? Philippians 4:9, you can look at Philippians 4, verse 8, all the different things we’re meant to meditate on. They’re the things we’re going to meditate on. They’re the things that are going to lead us into faith, instead of leading us into fear. And fear will come along and try and give us thoughts that are negative and thoughts that are, “It’s not going to work out. This isn’t going to work.” And we don’t want to meditate on those things. Praise God.
Carlie Terradez:
Right. Now, you mentioned a moment ago about praying in tongues and how powerful it is. I just want to mention this to the people, but if you’re not baptized in the Holy Spirit and you don’t have a prayer language, you need to be, you need to be. You can be born again and not baptized in the Holy Spirit, right? You’re still going to Heaven, God still loves you, but there is a powerful force. The Holy Spirit on the inside of us is the power of God.
Carlie Terradez:
And this is a separate experience from salvation. When you receive Jesus, you received the Holy Spirit. But when we received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, even Jesus was baptized in the Holy Spirit before he performed miracles, right? He told his disciples, “Go wait in the upper room,” in the first chapter of Acts, “Until the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” And afterwards, you can see the difference the Holy Spirit made just in the life of Peter. Now, the Apostle Peter before when Jesus died, he was the one that denied Jesus three times, and yet, after he was baptized in the Holy Spirit, he went out on the streets preaching. He was bold, right?
Carlie Terradez:
And so, we’re talking here about living a life that’s fearless, that’s full of boldness, that’s intrepid, that’s brave. You need the power of the Holy Spirit to make you bold, right? To live with all the boldness and the bravery and the courage that we’re talking about, that’s really part of us anyway, but to live it out, we need to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And that’s the point in which we recognize the Holy Spirit on the inside of us and allow the power of God to flow in us and through us.
Carlie Terradez:
One of the benefits of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, in fac, is a prayer language. You get to pray in tongues, is what we call it, in other tongues. And regardless of what you might have been told about tongues before… I had a lot of fear about this from my church background because I didn’t really understand it, and honestly, it’s quite natural to be afraid of things you don’t understand isn’t it? But eventually, I got past my fears and I recognize it’s a gift from God, and I want every good and precious gift from God. And I’ve received it, and now, if I struggle with fear, if fear starts to plague me, praying in tongues is such a powerful tool.
Carlie Terradez:
Because one of the benefits of that is it prays the perfect will of God. Sometimes when you’re so afraid and you just don’t know maybe how to pray, you don’t even know what to pray, when you pray in tongues, it focuses your mind, it keeps your mind state upon God, keeps you in the love of God. It builds you up, it says this in Jude, builds you up in your most Holy faith. And [inaudible 00:25:01] as you’re praying in tongues, even though you’re not praying in your native tongue, your mind doesn’t understand it, you’re praying the perfect will of God. You’re getting wisdom and revelation. And honestly, you can’t operate in fear and pray in tongues at the same time. To me, it’s a great antidote, so I would recommend it.
