thoughts are seeds

The Way We Think: Thoughts Are Seeds

The complexity of the human mind is truly miraculous. On average, the human brain only weighs about three pounds, yet it contains billions of neurons which control everything from our breathing reflex to philosophical reasoning. And the way we think determines our direction, minute to minute, day to day, throughout the course of our lives. Our brains are always working; the wheels are always turning, even when we are asleep!

Is it any wonder that the Word of God is so intentional about teaching us the importance of our thinking?

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7

Sometimes we don’t realize the impact our thoughts have on every part of our lives. However, our predominant thoughts are the force behind the direction that our lives will take. Our thoughts determine our attitudes, our emotions, and—ultimately—our actions! Therefore, we must learn to take control of our thoughts.

The Way We Think Plants Seeds

“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”Romans 8:6

What we choose to meditate on affects our emotions and produces fruit in our lives. Our thinking directly impacts our ability to receive the good things the Lord is trying to get to us. If we want to taste the good stuff, we have to plant good seed.

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”Philippians 4:8

Thoughts operate in the same way as seeds. You can often tell the type of seed people have planted by the look on their face and the words that they speak. There’s always a telltale, lemon-sucking expression that gives it away! The Bible says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). It’s also one of the first things the enemy tries to steal from us when we allow ourselves to be distracted by the junk around us. The great thing is, if we don’t like the fruit in our lives, we can pray for a crop failure and replant!

Plant Good Seed

When God created the world, He did so with His Word. Then He designed everything in creation—plants and animals—to continue to reproduce through seed. Every tree produces after its own kind through seed; every animal produces after its own kind through seed; even people produce after their own kind through their seed! In Mark, Jesus explained that the Word of God is also like a seed.

“The sower sows the word. And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” – Mark 4:14-20

If you don’t like the fruit that is being produced in your life, you must plant different seeds!
