The Word of God is very clear that God is the Healer and He wants us to be healed and whole. However, there are still many questions and myths about healing. Let’s look at some of these questions about healing, beginning with, “Can God heal me?”
Can God Heal Me?
Yes! God created your body, so of course He has the ability to heal you! Many of us already believe God has the power to heal us, but they don’t know if He will heal us. The truth is, God not only has the ability to heal you, He wants you to be healed!
All throughout the Gospels, there are dozens of stories of Jesus healing the sick. Yet not once did He ever refuse to heal someone who came to Him for healing. He also never gave anyone a sickness. Jesus was able and willing to heal the sick every single time (Matthew 8:2-3).
Who [Jesus] being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power…
— Hebrews 1:3 (brackets added)
Jesus is an exact representation of God, including His personality and character. In fact, God even said, “I am the Lord, your healer” (Exodus 15:26 ESV). If Jesus wanted to heal people, and never made anyone sick, God the Father is the exact same way! You can be confident that if you go to the Lord in faith for healing, you will receive it.
Can God Use Doctors to Heal?
Yes, He absolutely does! God gave humanity a gift of a wonderful intellect. He also created every plant and animal that provides medications and treatments for certain illnesses. God’s desire is for us to be healed, and He provides many different avenues of healing, including the use of doctors, surgery, and natural medicines.
Is it better to receive a miraculous healing? It doesn’t really matter how the healing comes, as long as you are healed! The Word of God teaches us that we receive the promises of God (including healing) by faith. But we are all in different places in our walks of faith.
As He healed, Jesus met each person in his or her place of faith. For one, He healed by touch and for another by a word from a distance. One believer may believe for a brand new hip, rather than needing surgery. However, another believer may be more ready to believe for a supernatural recovery from surgery. Both believers can experience healing because God meets us at the point of our faith.
There are two main things to remember. First, keep your personal relationship with God in the highest place. When you seek the Healer, the healing will come. Your healing journey will be unique because God knows exactly what you need. Allow others’ testimonies to inspire you, but listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit regarding your personal situation. Second, don’t put God in a box! He has so many ways for you to receive your healing. Listen to His voice and remain open to whatever method of healing He leads you to pursue.
Why Does God Heal Some and Not Others?
He doesn’t! God provided healing for us when Jesus died on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24 tells us that by the stripes of Jesus, we are healed! Physical and emotional healing are available for everyone, but it has to be received by faith. Just like God can’t force everyone to receive the salvation Jesus provided—although His will is for all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9)—He can’t force everyone to receive the healing Jesus provided either.
When we are believing God for healing, our eyes must remain on Jesus: His love, His sacrifice for us, His desire and power to heal, and His very nature as the Healer. Don’t allow the distraction and deception of the enemy to get your eyes on the circumstances surrounding you.
The question of, “Why didn’t that person get healed?” will not benefit you in any way. Healing has nothing to do with being a “good person” and everything to do with what Jesus paid for on the cross. God is not picking and choosing who gets to be healed. His will is always healing, every time.
There are many reasons why a person may not receive the healing Jesus freely provided. It’s tempting to try to use logic to explain what humanity just cannot explain. However, there are certain truths that we do know, based on the Word of God. Those truths are not based on our personal experiences in a fallen world.
Let’s refer back to the answer to the question, “Can God Heal Me?” Jesus never made anyone sick, and He never refused to heal anyone. God wants us healed and whole so that we can fulfill the purpose that He has for us! Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God’s plans for us are only good, not evil. His plans are for us to have a future and a hope. Keep your eyes on Jesus and your mind set on the promises found in the Word of God!
Why Does Sickness Sometimes Come Back?
You have an enemy who really does not want you to be well. You are a threat to the kingdom of darkness because you are filled with the Spirit of God. The devil will do what he can to keep you bound in sickness in order to keep you from doing what God has created you to do.
The thief [the devil] does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
— John 10:10 (brackets added)
Right after daughter was healed, we took her out to eat. This three-year-old, who had never been able to eat any food without gagging and throwing up, ate ice cream, chicken nuggets, and French fries!
After getting in the car to drive home, Hannah began to gag, like she had in the past. Immediately, Ashley took authority over the gagging and commanded it to stop, in Jesus’ name! It happened once more, but after using our authority, Hannah never had any symptoms of that disease ever again.
The devil attempted to deceive us into thinking, It didn’t work! Hannah wasn’t really healed! There was a temptation to accept the returning symptoms as evidence that God hadn’t truly healed Hannah. But that was a lie, and we refused to believe it.
However, many times believers who have experienced healing are deceived by lying symptoms. Rather than using their authority, they accept the lies of the enemy and allow those symptoms to set up camp in their bodies again.
The instant lying symptoms show up, take your authority over them and command them to go. By the stripes of Jesus you were healed. No lie of the devil can change the truth of the Word of God!
God has no problem with our questions about healing. He wants us to delve into His character as our Healer. Just know that when you seek Him, asking “Can God heal me?” His answer is a resounding yes!
