Possessing the Promises – Part 3
God keeps His promises! All of His promises are “Yes,” and “Amen.” In part 3 of Possessing the Promises, Ashley and Carlie Terradez teach what lessons you can learn from Abraham’s life regarding how to possess God’s promises.

Ashley: Did you know, the promises of God are yes and amen for you. That’s right, we’re teaching on how you can possess the promises of God, so stay tuned.

Ashley: Hello, and welcome to Abundant Life. We’re so glad you’ve joined us today in the lounge, praise God. We’re talking about possessing the promises of God. God has got good promises for us. And they’re all yes and amen in Christ. So today what we’re doing is we’re teaching on how you can possess the promises of God. And it’s a great series, praise God. We’re about halfway through, and where are we up to?
Carlie: We’ve covered lots of stuff. In our first session, we were talking about how God is faithful. He’s not like other people in our life that may have made a promise and let us down. He is a promise keeper. And when he gives his word, we talked about the power of what it means when God gives his word and he makes a covenant. When he sends his word, it does not return void. In fact, his word was so powerful that’s how the very worlds were created. He sent his word and healed us. How that we can trust the word of God and be sure and steadfast in our life. That it is a promise that we can build our life upon. And by his word, that’s how we obtain the promises that Jesus paid for. Man, it’s a great deal.
Ashley: Hey man, it’s awesome.
Carlie: I mean, Jesus done all the hard work, all we have to do now is possess the promises. And what do we mean by that? Let’s take a look. We’ve been looking, last time we looked a little bit at the life of Abraham and how God made a covenant with Abraham. I want to pick him up here again.
Ashley: Pick him up? Picking Abraham up?
Carlie: Yeah, there you go.
Ashley: Picking the story up.
Carlie: Picking up the story here in Genesis 15. So we’re going to look at Genesis 15. This is in verse one. It says, “After this, the word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision saying, ‘Do not fear Abraham, I am your shield and your exceedingly great reward.’ But Abraham said, ‘God, Lord, what will you give me, seeing that I am childless? And the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’ And Abraham said, ‘Since you have not given me any children, my air is a servant born in my house.’ But the word of the Lord, the word of the Lord came to him saying, ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son that is from your own body will be your heir.'”
And he said to him, he brought him outside… And I love this because sometimes, I don’t know about you, Ashley, but I read the promises of God and I see them on the pages and I believe them, but it’s really hard for my mind to wrap itself around how that’s going to come from here into here, into manifesting in my life.
Ashley: To actually seeing it in your every day life.
Carlie: To seeing it, yeah. That’s hard to imagine sometimes.
Ashley: Yeah, I think this is one place we get stuck. As Christians, we understand that God’s good. And we read the promises and we think, “Yeah, God wants me well, God wants me prosperous, God wants me to have peace of mind and things like that.” But then actually seeing it in everyday life, in everyday life, it’s that transitioning from… Some people say it this way, from the spirit realm where it’s already done, Jesus already provided it for us in the spirit realm, to our physical, everyday life, seeing that, that breach, seeing that.
And I think, obviously we’ve taught on this before, but faith is what is the bridge between the spirit world and the physical world. So that’s the bridge. We use our faith-
Carlie: That’s the trust in confidence.
Ashley: The trust in confidence. We believe the promises, and when we believe the promises, what happens is they go from our spirit realm into the physical world. So our natural environment, if you like, our everyday experience. But doing that is the part that some people get stuck on, hung up on. And one of the main things we need to do is believe the promises and renew our mind to them.
So if we don’t understand them, we’re spirit, soul, and body, right? So in our spirit, first John 4:17, “As he is, so are you in this world?” When you got born again, in your spirit, you become just like Jesus. That means you have everything. You have all the healing you need, you have all the provision you need, you have all the pieces you need, you have all the righteousness you need in your spirit.
Carlie: You’re carrying it around in your spirit.
Ashley: You’re carrying it around in your spirit. It’s amazing. So in the spirit, we’re one spirit of the Lord. It’s powerful. We are just like Jesus in our spirits. But we also have a soul and we have a body. So our body’s our flesh, but our soul is the part that’s tricky if you like. Because our soul is made up of our mind, our will and our emotions. And that’s what we feel, and that’s what we think on. And oftentimes what we feel and what we think can become more real to us than who we are in the spirit, the truth, if you like. And I heard one person put it this way, they said, “How did you feel?” And they said, “I don’t ask myself how I feel, I tell myself how I feel.” Because sometimes we listen to our feelings and we say, “Well, I don’t feel like God loves me.”
Carlie: It doesn’t look like you’re healed.
Ashley: It doesn’t look like you’re healed. Well, that’s not the truth is it. You might not feel that God loves you, you might not be able to feel God’s love right now, but the fact is, God has an unconditional love for you, and his love is always there for you, even if you feel it or not. So that’s just an example, but this is where we have to take it from the spirit realm to the physical realm, to actually experiencing it. Whether that’s healing of our body, whether that’s relationships restored, whether that’s righteousness overcoming sin, addictions and things like that. It’s taking it from the spirit realm, who we are in Christ and seeing it in our everyday life.
Carlie: And I think, depending on the situation, sometimes that can be easier said than done.
Ashley: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Carlie: And I love what the Lord said to Abraham, because remember he had already spoken to Abraham and he was childless at this point. He just explained that, he’s well up there in age, so is his wife, nothing much has been going on there. They’re not physically able to have children, they’re barren.
Ashley: Need to explain that any more or not? They’re both in their nineties.
Carlie: They are very elderly.
Ashley: They’re both in their nineties.
Carlie: Yes, it’s not looking good. And yet God has given them this promise. Abraham and Sarah have to decide that they’re going to put faith, that they’re going to believe in God’s word. Because you know what, they’re looking at each other thinking, “Honey, I don’t know about this.” There wasn’t an immaculate conception. If they believed it, they were going to have to act on it. They were going to have to cooperate with it.
Ashley: And in the natural, it looked impossible.
Carlie: It didn’t look like it was going to happen. It looked impossible. But look at what God does here. He meets Abraham in his point of need in verse five. So this is Genesis 15, verse five. He brought him, this is Abraham, outside and he said, “Look up towards heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And he said, ‘So will your descendants be?'”
And I love this, in another place he says, he took him out and he says, “You are descendants will be as the sand is under your feet.” And so God gave Abraham some very visual pictures to meditate upon. It’s all very well saying, “You’re childless right now, but you’re going to have zillions and zillions of descendants, and they’re going to go on for generations-”
Ashley: Is zillion a number?
Carlie: I don’t know, but I just made it up.
Ashley: A lot.
Carlie: A lot, okay. Now Abraham’s trying to wrap his mind around just having one. But then God’s picture for Abraham and Sarah is so much bigger than just the one. And I think sometimes, we get stuck thinking when we’re struggling to just believe for this much, where God wants to give us this much. And so he gives Abraham a visual. He says, “Whenever you come outside…”
Now, remember the scenario in which Abraham lived. They would have lived nomadic lives in tents. So the sand-
Ashley: In the desert.
Carlie: In the desert.
Ashley: In tents in the desert.
Carlie: So they’re outside, they’re under the stars at night. There wouldn’t have been any light pollution. They would have gone out and the stars would have been like billions and trillions, zillions of stars.
Ashley: You like that word, zillions, don’t you?
Carlie: I like that, right? All over the sky. And every time he looked up at night, he would have saw the multitude of stars and remembered the word of God that he’d spoken to him.
Ashley: Like a visual reminder.
Carlie: Every time he put his sandals on or took them off, he’d have felt the sand between his toes. He’d have picked the sand out of his toenails.
Ashley: Oh, that’s a bit graphic. You could have just said dusted his feet of of the sand.
Carlie: I’m just imagining going to the beach.
Ashley: You’re going down to picking the sand out of his toenails.
Carlie: Yeah. Anyway, I bet he did that. I bet he did that. When you get into bed and you get all the sand in the bed, if you don’t clean-
Ashley: Yeah, that’s true.
Carlie: Anyway.
Ashley: That’s true.
Carlie: See, you didn’t think you were going to get this kind of lessons today, did you? But he would have remembered that every time he got into bed with sandy feet, and that sand was, in his bed with him, he would have remembered, as many as the grains of sand that I can feel, that are in between my sheets, under my feet right now, that’s how many my descendants are going to be. That’s the word of God that he’s spoken to us.
It was a permanent visual reminder on a daily basis. He put that picture before Abraham, because in the natural, he didn’t have anything to look at. Remember, he couldn’t phone a friend, Abraham and Sarah, they couldn’t find somebody else that had been through this before. They couldn’t go on our website and check out and find other people’s testimonies. There wasn’t a book where it was written down. They didn’t have somebody else to call up and talk about this to that’s been through this challenge before. They needed a visual. God gave them a picture on the inside of them, of what that promise was going to look like.
And I think, God does the same things with us today. I remember, I was in a wheelchair when I was 18 years old, I’d had a lot of seizures, had some brain damage and lost the ability to walk. And so I pretty much had no feeling from the waist down. And being in that wheelchair, the doctor’s report for me was really negative. They didn’t think I was going to be able to walk again.
And I remember I was a born again, probably about a year into being born again. I was born again when I was 17. And so, I’d been in the word of God. I’d love reading the word of God. I’d love writing out scriptures and sticking them all over my wall on sticky notes. But there was a lot of things I didn’t understand.
I didn’t understand that I had any kind of authority as a believer. I didn’t understand about faith. I didn’t understand about the power of my words. So many different things. I knew just a little bit of knowledge. But the little bit of knowledge that I did know was crucial. I knew that God’s word to me was bigger than what I could feel or what I was experiencing in that moment. And that God had a plan for my life that didn’t involve being in a wheelchair.
And my church youth group, actually, they were doing one of these outdoor activity where you go mountain climbing and canoeing and rafting and all that kind of stuff, in about three months time. And I’d already paid my deposit. I think I had a bit of motivation there.
Ashley: That was motivating. Where your treasure is there, you heart will be also.
Carlie: Exactly.
Ashley: If you’ve already paid the money, I understand.
Carlie: And so I remember thinking to myself, “You know what? I’ve planned to go on this trip, I’m going to go on this trip.” And I started seeing myself. I knew that the wheelchair, the situation I was in was not God’s plan for me. God doesn’t plan for us to be sick. He doesn’t plan for us to be in pain or to be in grief or to be in poverty. His promises for us were always yes and amen. They were always good and perfect promises, plans to prosper us, and to give us a hope and an expected end.
So when I looked around me at this wheelchair, I’m like, “This doesn’t compute. I’m sorry, God has a plan for my life, and at 18, it’s not to be in a wheelchair.” So with my mustard seed faith, I started dreaming. I started imagining myself climbing that mountain. Getting up out that wheelchair and walking and climbing that mountain in three months time. I started seeing myself do it, kind of like with Abraham and Sarah. Every time I closed my eyes, I could see myself doing it.
And one day the Lord spoke to me and he says, “You don’t have to believe everything in one go. My promises are yes and amen, but you don’t have to believe for everything in one go.” In other words, to me, that’s just like getting up and running and climbing a mountain. I couldn’t imagine myself going from being in a wheelchair to climbing a mountain. I was dreaming, but I didn’t understand how to get in between. What are the steps, literally the steps that happened in between?
And so the Lord showed me, you don’t have to believe everything in one go. You just need to believe to take one step. Can you believe to take one step. So I thought, “You know what? I can believe to take one step.” So I started imagining myself standing up. And the first stage to walking is standing. And standing and then taking one step after the other. And so I waited until I could really see it, where I could really visualize it on the inside of me until it became real to me. Until what God was showing me was more real to me than what I was experiencing. Which is, I think is where you’re going with that. We have to see it in our mind first, right?
Ashley: Yeah. It’s like second Corinthians, five and seven. Second Corinthians five, seven says, “We walk by faith and not by sight.” And when we choose to walk by faith, what we’re doing is we’re choosing to walk by the promises of God, on the word of God. And we’re making that more real than our natural circumstances. And what that means is we identify with what the word says about us rather than about what we’re feeling or about our natural thought life.
So, you may be having feelings of pain in your body, but the truth is the word of God. You are healed. Jesus has paid the provision for your healing. Now you might see that you’re broke in your bank account, you haven’t got any money, but the truth is, you are prosperous on the inside. The question is-
Carlie: The truth in the God’s word is that.
Ashley: The truth of the word God. So the question is, getting it from God’s word, or you could say the spirit, because what God’s word does, it reveals to us who we are in the spirit. And getting that out into our soul so that we can actually experience it in the natural world.
Carlie: Yep. And that’s the process.
Ashley: And I think that’s the challenge, yeah.
Carlie: And so, I didn’t have the whole picture, literally. And I would want to encourage someone with this today, you need to start where you’re at. If we’re going to possess the promises that God has for us, God has these amazing promises, but we have to take possession of them. We have to take ownership of them. And in order to do that, we start possessing those promises first in our minds.
And I started to see myself getting up and standing. And this next scripture is actually in verse eight, this is Genesis 15, verse eight. Abraham said, “Lord, how may I know that I will possess it.” See possessions, possession of the promises, doesn’t start in the natural circumstances, doesn’t start in our physical world, it starts in our minds.
We have to take possession of the promise in our mind first. We have to see us as going into the promised land and literally driving out the inhabitants. The word possess in the original Hebrew is [foreign language]. It means to drive out the previous tenants, to evict them, to thoroughly destroy them. And so in our mind, we take possession of the promises of God by doing the very same things. We have to take possession of them by driving out the previous tenants in our mind that says, “You can’t do it. You’re not strong enough. It’s not going to work for you. Look, you’re still sick. Look, you’re still broke.” We have to drive them out
Ashley: That’s self-talk, that goes on. If you’re not careful, you’ll listen to that self-talk that says, “You’re not going to get healed or you’re not going to see this breakthrough.”
Carlie: Or it’s not true.
Ashley: “It’s not true. It’s not going to work for you. And it might work for them, but it’s not going to work for you, or you’re not good enough.” And a lot of that is our own natural thinking, our own natural self-talk. Some of that’s the enemy, planting those thoughts into your mind.
Carlie: Some of it’s past negative experience.
Ashley: Yeah, past experience. But we have these thoughts and these thoughts can lead us, if we’re not careful, we can identify with these thoughts rather than who we really are. And that’s why it’s so crucial to renew our minds. We’re renewing our minds, we’re basically brainwashing ourselves with the truth, with the goods things. We brainwash ourself with the truth of the promises of God. And then we’ll start identifying. And then what will happen is, if something comes up that’s contrary to that promise, if we experience a time of lack in our provision, or if we feel pain in our body, now, instead of saying, “That’s me, I’m the sick and the poor trying to get healed and prosperous.” Really, what we’ll start thinking is what we start feeling and experiencing is now, I’m the prosperous, and I’m the healed-
Carlie: Because that’s what’s in your spirit.
Ashley: … and these symptoms, that’s the real me, that’s the truth, and these symptoms are coming against me to challenge that. But really who I really am, is I’m healed, I’m whole, I’m the righteousness of Christ. And that’s the difference. It’s a very different way of looking at it. You’re basically defending your position that you already have, rather than trying to go and take a new position. That’s who you really are. And I can’t emphasize enough. I know there’s people watching right now. And he said, “Ashley, that’s all very well, but you don’t understand my situation.” Well, your situation you’re talking about is natural, and I’m not demeaning the natural situation you’re going through.
Carlie: Pain is real, it hurts.
Ashley: Pain, all these different things, they’re real, we’ve got sympathy for that, that it’s not good situations. We understand, we’ve been through some of that ourselves. We don’t understand everything you’re going through, but we’ve been through some of it ourselves. But I’m telling you the truth. That’s a truth. A truth is, you’re experiencing pain in your body. A truth is, you’re experiencing lack in your finances, fill in the blanks, et cetera, et cetera.
But the truth is the word of God. The truth is the promises of God are for you. And God’s promises to you, 2nd Corinthians 1:20, God’s promises for you are yes and amen. He’s made his mind up about you and he loves you, and he’s got these promises for you. Jeremiah 29:11, “So I know the thoughts I have towards you. Thoughts to prosper you and thoughts to give you a positive future. Amen.”
So God’s already made up his mind about you. And he’s already made the provision through Jesus, through the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus, and through grace, you’ve already got these things. The question is, are you going to relate to these things, or are you going to relate to the natural circumstances, the natural situations. And you’re right, it happens in our minds, what we think on.
Carlie: And that’s exactly where I was when I was sitting in my wheelchair, thinking, “How is this going to work?” But when God said, “You don’t need to believe for everything, you just need to start where you’re at, belief in one step,” I put the brakes on that wheelchair, and I decided, “Okay, legs, this is what we’re going to do right now.” And I started shouting at my legs, I started saying “Legs, we’re going to stand up. This is what we’re going to do.”
I didn’t understand about the power of my tongue or the power of words. God created the world with his words, that’s how powerful our words. And he’s put his word in our mouth, amen. When we speak out words of faith, God is backing our words up with his power. And so, as I started speaking to my legs, power started coming into my legs. They started to begin to get strong. I started to feel strength in those. And before I knew I was standing up for the first time in months.
And I looked down, I’m like, “Well, you know what? We’ve come this far, we might as well carry on.” I said, “Legs, this is what we’re going to do right now. We’re going to move. Big toe, we’re going to move.” And we just needed to move an inch. That would be classed as walking, right. It was a steplet, it was a baby step.
But before I knew it I was taking one step and then two steps and I’d taken 10 steps. And I was at the front door and I looked back at my wheelchair and thought, “I’m not going to go back and get in that.” And so I carried on walking. And three months later, I climbed that mountain. But it all began with reading the word of God and getting God’s plan for my life, understanding that his promise and his word was bigger than what my experience was in that moment. And then I started to get into agreement with that in my mind, and with my words and my action followed those things.
Let’s look at this in Deuteronomy chapter four. This is Moses here. It says “Now, therefore, listen O Israel, to the statutes and judgments which I’m teaching you to do, so that you may live; and go in and possess the land, the Lord, your father is giving you. You should not add a word to what I’m commanding you to, or take one away from anything I’ve said, but that you may keep the commandments of the Lord, your God, which I have commanded you to.”
You see, I think sometimes we miss the point in that, even though the promises of God are yes and amen, we still have to take possession of them. We still have to respond in faith and go out and take what’s ours and evict the previous tenants of doubt, of fear, of unbelief until the word of God becomes more real to us than those circumstances. And it’s important here where it says, “Listen to what the Lord is saying. Don’t add any words to it.” No buts. No, ifs or buts or ands. Or, it’s not going to work for me, or I believe the word but.
Ashley: But. Got to be careful where you put your but.
Carlie: You’ve got to be really careful where you put your but.
Ashley: Because what happens is, whatever you said before, you’re but, you’re negating whatever you say after it. And so many times we say things like, “I know that God’s provided for me, but I’m running out of money, I’m not going to make it to the end of the month.” Or, “I know God says that I’m healed, but the doctor says I’m sick, and I’ve got pain in my body.”
See, what we’re doing is, we’re saying whatever comes after that but, what we’re saying is that’s what we really believe. When you turn that around and say, “Look, a truth is, I’ve got pain in my body, but the truth is-
Carlie: I’m healed of the Lord.
Ashley: “… I’m the heeled of the Lord.” And you start identifying with that. “I may have lack in my finances, but the true fear is God’s going to provide for my needs, praise God, according to his riches.”
So that’s where we need to be at. Need to be the point that we’re walking by faith and not by sight. We’re walking by the scriptures. The word of God is the final authority in our life. And this is like I said earlier, sometimes this isn’t easy. If you’ve got someone, someone’s wronged you and the word of God is telling you, you’ve got to forgive them. You’ve got to let them go, release them. That’s tough. You might have to exercise that minute by minute, hour by hour at first. But you’re putting the word of God above that situation. You’re basically exalting the word of God. You’re saying the word of God is the final authority in my life, that’s what I’m going by, that’s who I am in Christ.
And you do that, what’ll happen is, you’ll start to see your natural circumstances change. And that’s my testimony. I’ve seen it happen so many times when I’m experiencing lack or I’m experiencing a situation and I’ll put the word of God first. I’ll start meditating on it, I’ll start thanking God, I’ll start writing out scriptures, whatever you need to do to put the word before you. You do them things, and I’ll tell you what, it’s amazing how their natural circumstances will change.
Now, it’s not always overnight. It’s not always instantaneous. Sometimes it can be, but a lot of the time it takes time. The seed, time and harvest. And you’re sowing those seeds as you’re reading the words, you’re reading them scriptures and letting those scriptures just getting on the inside of your soul. You’re sowing those seeds, but it can take a little bit of time for those seeds to grow.
Carlie: Right. And we have a whole series on that very point called Manifesting Miracles that explains that in great detail. But God is not up in heaven deciding how long that time period is. His word to you is yes and amen. We’re the ones by the condition of our heart that determines how long that, that season takes.
But I want you to draw your attention to this back in Deuteronomy chapter 4:1. When he said to the people, “These things, which I’m teaching you to do so that you may live and go in and possess the land, which the Lord your father has given you.” In other words, listen to the word of the Lord so that you may live.
If we want to live the kind of life that lot the Lord has for us, we need to listen to what he’s saying to us, place the word of God of high value. This word live, it actually means in the original Hebrew, it means, and I don’t know how to pronounce this, but it looks like haya, H-A-Y-A. It means to live prosperously to be restored to health, to be revived from sickness, from death, from discouragement to grow and to be preserved. If we want to live the kind of life to be delivered from sickness, to be restored from health, to live prosperously, we need to really pay attention to what the Lord is saying and plant the word of God in our hearts.
Because the word of God, it’s like a seed, and it will blossom wherever it’s planted. We see this in Luke. Let’s turn over here real quickly to Luke chapter eight. Luke chapter eight, verse 11. And actually, while we’re going there, I’m reminded of the story of Mary when the angel appeared during Luke chapter one and told her she was going to have the Messiah. And she said, “Let it be unto me, according to your word.”
The first step to possessing the land, if you like possessing the promises of God starts in our mind. It starts with agreeing with the word of God. We need to say, “Let it be unto me, Lord, according to your word, not according to how I feel about it or what it looks like, or what circumstances or past experience have told me. Let it be unto me according to your word. I’m going to agree with the word.”
Look at this. This is in Luke chapter eight, and this is the parable of the sower. Now this parable here from eight to 15 is talking about the different conditions of the heart. But I want to look here at the first condition here in verse 11 and 12. “Now this parable means this, the seed is the word of God. Then along the path of those who hear the word of God.” So the sower is sowing the seed. “Then comes the devil who takes away the word from their hearts, less they should believe it and be saved.”
You see the devil, he’s attacking us in our finances. He’s attacking us in our physical bodies, in our relationships. In every promise, in our identity, in every promise that God has for us the devil is going to come to try to steal the word from us, the word of that promise. Because it says here, look, “He’s the one who comes to take away the word, the promised word from their hearts, because if they believe it and be saved, we’re going to be deadly to the enemy.” That word saved means, [inaudible], it’s to be made healed, to be whole, to be delivered, to be kept safe, sound, rescued and safe from sin.
You see the enemy roams around this world, seeking whom he may devour. He doesn’t have any power over us. He can’t steal the promises of God from you. The enemy does not have the power over you to take the promises of God from you. God has made up his mind about you and his promise is a yes and amen. But what our part to do is to decide, I’m going to possess the promises. I’m not going to be passive. I’m going to take hold of every good and precious promise that God has for me, and I’m going to choose to agree with those and say, “Let it be unto me, Lord, according to your will.” The first step to possessing the promises is possessing them in the mind, by agreeing with the word of God. Amen.
Ashley: That’s neat.
Carlie: Good stuff.
Ashley: How can two walk together unless they agree? You agree with the word of God and you walk together.
Carlie: Amen. Would you pray for the people real quick?
Ashley: We’re out of time until next time, but we’d love to pray for you before you go. And we just want to believe God for you. So father God, I thank you for everyone watching and listening today. I thank you, Lord, that you have perfect promises for them. And I thank you that they are stepping out in faith and they’re believing your promises, in Jesus name. Amen.

God has said that his promises are yes and amen, but we have to put the amen to his promises. We have to go out and possess, take possession of our promises. And so carry on listen to this series. Don’t try and work it out yourself by your flesh, try and make sure that you’re sticking to God’s plan and how God wants you to receive it, praise God, it’s spirit to spirit. And sometimes we can do that, we can end up getting into trouble-

Ashley: We can have an Ishmael. We end up getting into trouble because we’re trying to help God out and do things in the flesh rather than do things through the spirit, through the word of God.
